John Tyndall Letters
Description
John Tyndall (1820-1893) was a leading physicist working within Britain in the 19th Century. The correspondence available in this collection are almost all addressed to Dr. William Francis, a member of the Royal Dublin Society, who Tyndall aided in working on the Society's Philosophical Magazine for science publications. Tyndall is known for his work on diamagnetism, defense of evolutionary theory, and work on meteorology and presence in the humanism movement. The collection contains 41 items of correspondence, and is a valuable asset in studies of nineteenth century scientific discussion and education.
In 2008 the RDS Committee of Science and Technology and the RDS Library & Archives collaborated on a project to digitise and catalogue the Fitzgerald Letters, which the John Tyndall letters were a part of, and they are now available here for the first time as a digital collection.
