Portrait of The Hon. William Evelyn Wylie, K.C. (1881–1964), Irish barrister, legal advisor to Dublin Castle, judge of the High Court in Ireland, President of the Royal Dublin Society (1938-41), Vice-President of the Royal Dublin Society (1926-64), Executive Committee Chairman (1936-59). The subject depicted half-length, directed right, gazing front; seated in a brown leather armchair, with folded arms resting on a leather-top, mahogany writing desk upon which are an inkwell, desk blotter and an oak stationery box (cat. no. RDS.538); wearing a grey suit, white shirt and maroon tie; in the background, a tabletop plaster model of John Henry Foley’s Statue of Edmund Burke on a wooden plinth, signed and dated lower left Leo Whelan 1944.
