Description
History painting; a preparatory oil sketch depicting the proposed design for the ceiling of St. Patrick’s Hall at Dublin Castle; commissioned by George Nugent Temple Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham; the works carried out at Dublin Castle by Vincenzo Waldré between 1788 and 1802. In the central panel, George III is flanked by Britannia and Justice on his right, Hibernia and Liberty on his left, and Victory (or Fortuna) and Minerva before him; the upper panel depicts St. Patrick lighting the Paschal fire on the Hill of Slane; the lower panel portrays Henry II receiving the submission of the Irish Chiefs; unsigned.
