Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Preston to George F. Fitzgerald. Preston writes from the Inns of Court Hotel Limited, London [entrances: High Hilborn and Lincoln’s End Fields]. He thanks Fitzgerald for his help and sympathy during their “great trial.” Preston writes that he has been carrying out school inspections on behalf of the Department for the past two weeks and will return the following evening, after which he hopes to have a free week in Dublin. He writes about a recent lecture he gave at the Royal Institution, which he describes as “fairly intelligible.” He met attendees afterwards. He suffered a “very bad gastric attack” recently and fasted for 2-3 days. He writes about the “bismuth spiral,” a chemical element used in his experiments, which is manufactured by Hartmann and Braun, Frankfurt. He writes that he has looked at the Echelon Spectroscope in Hilgers and doubts that it will be useful except in some “particular cases.” The spectroscope has a problem with “overlapping.” 4pp.
