Title

[Letter to George F. Fitzgerald from Katherine M. Preston]

Identifier

GFF 11/14

Description

Handwritten letter from Katie Preston to George F. Fitzgerald, written from the Preston home in Bardowie, Orwell Park, Rathgar, County Dublin on behalf of her husband, Thomas Preston. He is unable to attend the upcoming meeting of the Council of the Royal Society, where he is to receive the Boyle Medal. The Prestons ask Fitzgerald to act as his representative and accept the medal on his behalf during the presentation.
Katie writes that Fitzgerald was a “constant friend” to Preston and influenced his scientific career. She concludes that Preston’s health is “gaining day by day” and they trust that “no drawback will happen.” The date of the meeting is not yet known, but Dr Joly will confirm the details [Preston died of a perforated ulcer less than 2 months later]. 3pp.
