Description
Ptolemy I, the son of Lagos and Arsinoe, was the founder of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. He proclaimed himself king of Egypt in 305 BC. Berenice I, the daughter of Magas and Antigone, married Ptolemy I in 317. She was only his third wife, but went on being his queen until his death. Ptolemy received his epithet Soter (the Savior) from the polis of Rhodos. The official cult as Theos Soter (saving god) was established by his son, Ptolemy II, after his death. His wife, Berenice I, was then also worshipped together with Ptolemy I as Theoi Soteres.
