Description
Lawrence E. Steele (1855-1945) was Vice President of the RDS and a passionate Egyptologist. He served as Secretary of the Egypt Exploration Fund and travelled extensively around Egypt. On his death, he bequeathed his collection of glass slides to the RDS Library & Archives. This collection comprises over 1500 glass slides depicting scenes of Egypt in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including images of temples, tombs, statues and landscapes. There are also drawings and maps collected from books in the collection. Steele used the glass slides to educate the people of Ireland, as he travelled around the island delivering lectures on Egypt. Steele's collection of books on Egyptology is available to browse via the RDS online library catalogue.
The Lawrence E. Steele Collection digitisation and cataloguing project has been funded through the generosity of Deirdre and Neil Naughton, and the Heritage Council's Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2025.
