Description

Portrait of Jaspar Robert Joly (1819–92), vicar-general of the diocese of Tuam and bibliophile. The subject depicted three-quarter length, directed and gazing front; seated next to a table covered with a red cloth to the right, upon which are a number of volumes, one with a green and gold spine; bespectacled, with a Shenandoah-style beard and wearing a black robe and white shirt; set against a dark interior, the red-papered wall with wood-panelling beneath the dado.
