Portrait of John Henry Watson (1787-1869), inaugural Master of the Tullow Hunt, Carlow. The subject depicted full length, directed slightly left, gazing front; seated in a red leather armchair; wearing a scarlet, cutaway hunting coat with four brass buttons, buff-coloured waistcoat, white chemise with standing collar, black cravat, buff-coloured breeches – buttoned at the knee – and black top boots; on the right, a pair of brown-leather riding gloves and a black, felt-covered riding hat; on the left, a bookcase upon which is a bound volume, a folded newspaper and a hunting horn; in his right hand, a riding crop; on his right knee, a foxhound in sitting position rests its head; on the floor beneath his feet, a wolfskin; signed and dated lower right Painted by Catterson Smith PRHA 1861 Dublin.
