Description

Of ovoid form with cover on a square base, chased with scrolls, the lower body chased with leaves, the rim and conforming cover each chased with flowers and scrolls and with two reeded scrolling handles, engraved on one side with the inscription ROYAL DUBLIN SOCIETY HORSE SHOW INTERNATIONAL TEAM JUMPING COMPETITION NATIONS CUP PRESENTED BY HIS HIGHNESS THE AGA KHAN, on conforming mahogany-finish square plinth, each side applied with silver plaques, one side engraved with names of countries and dates.

This is the sixth incarnation of The Nations’ Cup, also known as the Aga Khan trophy. Ireland won the fifth cup outright, after three successive wins between 1977 and 1979.

Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah, Aga Khan III, 48th Imam of Nizari Ismailis, donated the cup to the Royal Dublin Society in 1926 in appreciation of all the pleasures he had experienced at previous Dublin Horse Shows and to demonstrate his gratitude to his Irish tutor, Mr. Kenny. The first international team jumping competition was held at the Royal Dublin Society, Ballsbridge, in 1926.
