Description

With tapering cylindrical on a spreading base, the base chased with stiff leaves on a reeded ground and with a beaded border, and with a knopped flower and foliage stem, the body finely chased on one side with a scene of knights going into battle, and engraved on the other side with the inscription THE PEMBROKE CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTED TO THE ROYAL DUBLIN SOCIETY BY THE EARL OF PEMBROKE AND MONTGOMERY FOR THE BEST YOUNG HORSE SUITABLE FOR A HUNTER BRED IN IRELAND AND CONTINUOUSLY OWNED BY THE EXHIBITOR, the neck chased with figures within fruiting foliage and with two dragon handles, the detachable cover with a knight-in-armour finial, the neck further engraved with the inscription WON OUT BY OWEN RYAN 1925 – 26 – 27.

Retailed by Edmond Johnson & Son, Dublin

This cup was won outright by Mr. Owen Ryan in 1927 for the Champion Two or Three-Year-Old Yearling Filly. It was presented to the Royal Dublin Society in 1996 in memory of Mr. Ryan by his daughter, the late Ms. Sheila Ryan.
