Description

The tapering cylindrical body on a spreading base, the base chased with stiff leaves on a reeded ground and with a beaded border, and with a knopped flower and foliage stem, the body finely chased on one side with a scene of knights going into battle, and engraved on the other side with an inscription reading 'The Pembroke Challenge cup presented to The Royal Dublin Society by the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery for the best young horse suitable for a hunter bred in Ireland and continuously owned by the exhibitor', the neck chased with figures within fruiting foliage and with two dragon handles, the detachable cover with a knight in armour finial, the neck further engraved with a presentation inscription.
