Part of an article depicting the movement of an obelisk. First published in Scientific American, Vol. 129, No. 1 (July 1923), p. 27 with the title 'Obelisk-Raising Explained: How the Ancient Egyptian Engineers Employed a Sloping Ramp and a Sand-Pit.' Original article also contained a depiction of the process at an alternate angle, a diagram of the raising of the obelisk, and text describing the process. The text mentions Cleopatra's Needle, the Lateran Obelisk in Rome, Italy, and an obelisk found in Assouan (Aswan), Egypt.
