Description
A handwritten letter from John Gunn to Prof, George F. Fitzgerald, dated 4th of December 1888.
John Gunn informs Professor Fitzgerald that two individuals, Mr. B. Kernan of Warrenpoint and Mr. A. Mulligan of Rathfriland, have volunteered to take surface water temperature measurements. Mulligan also suggests contacting Mr. John Smyth, C.E., of Banbridge, and mentions plans to establish a high-altitude station in the Mourne Mountains. Gunn asks whether Fitzgerald’s circular mentioned the 2 shillings and 6 pence charge for each thermometer and case, as neither volunteer appears to be aware of this cost.
2pp.
Transcription:
Dear Sir,
Two gentlemen, Mr B. Kernan, Warrenpoint, and Mr A. Hulligan, Rathfriland have already written me expressing their willingness to take observations on the temperature of surface water in their neighbourhood. The latter suggests that Mr John Smyth, Sons, C.E. Lanaderg, Banbridge, should be applied to if this has not already be done.
He also says that he hopes to establish a station among the Mourne Mountains, at some height above the sea.
May I ask If, in your circular, you have stated that a charge of 2/6 is made for each thermometer and case? Neither Mr. Mulligan nor Mr. Kernan seem to be aware that such a charge is to be made.
Yours truly,
John Gunn
Prof. Fitzgerald
