"Dear Prof. Fitzgerald
I shall be greatly obliged by your thanking Prof. Smithells for his kind offer of furnishing a translation of Van't Hoff's paper for the Phil. Mag., but I should not be able to find room for it earlier than in the May Number, and if he can follow the advice of Sir Reynolds and condense in any way, so much the better. My great difficulty at the present time is to find space for the communications already in hand. The March Number contains one sheet extra, every page of the April Number is occupied, and a good part of that for May already made up.
With regard to Prof. Rücker's idea of buying up the Phil. Mag., after much consideration and advising with friends I am unable to submit any proposal. To us as printers and publishers it has a value far greater than the profit derived from its sale. In slack times it enables us to keep our best men employed, and it also helps to bring us new clients. If Prof. Rücker has any suggestions to make for improving the Magazine I shall always be most willing to consider them, and if feasible to adopt them.
Yours very truly
William Francis"
