Dear Sir,
The remarks made by Sir William Preece on the relation between theory and practice in his Presidential Address before the Insititution of Civil Engineers on the occassion of the recent Conference have attracted considerable attention from theorists and practicians. These remarks are embodied in my leader in the current issue of "The Electrician" and it seems probable that the remarks, together with my comments thereon in the leader, will elicit considerable discussion. The present seems a particularly opportune moment for reviewing the interdependence of science and commercial practice, or of theory and practice, and of investigating the claims of each upon the other.
I should esteem it a favour, therefore, if you can let me have a letter for publication embodying your views on this important question.
