Description

Transcription:
"My dear Sir,
I am very sorry to have to return you the Magnet; it is entirely my own fault in not telling you the house is arranged to observe it from the North. The bar will therefore have to be fitted to that end, and the scale at the South seeking end.
I feel you have just cause to be annoyed with me, for I know how valuable your time must be. You will perhaps be able to experiment with a coating when the bar is dismounted. I find with its fittings it turns the ¼ lb. It is necessary I suppose for it to hang in the horizontal plane to determine the scale value, so I need hardly remind you of that.
I am about to tar the roofs, and give the outside wood-work two coats of paint while the weather is dry.
What I said the other day about a disturbance on the 15 Feby. is I find greatly due to a mistake in the reductions. I can use the observation, but nevertheless the magnet was unsteady.
Apologising for all this trouble I am giving you,
Believe Me,
Yours very truly,
J.E. Cullum"
