Lawrence E. Steele: Irish Egyptologist
The exhibition looks at the life and career of Lawrence Steele who donated a large collection of glass slides, books and diaries concerning his travels to Egypt between 1895 and 1914, where he joined the excavations of leading archaeologists, such as Edward Ayrton, Flinders Petrie and Theodore M. Davis. The images Steele took on these trips were used to illustrate lectures he gave at the RDS and across Ireland during the period. The RDS Library & Archives received a Heritage Council Community Grant to complete the digitisation of the collection in 2025.
