Introduction

For almost 300 years the RDS has responded to the needs and priorities of Ireland, addressing gaps in the development of our culture and economy that have shaped the country.

Founded in 1731 as the Dublin Society, the RDS set out from the beginning with a very practical ethos to improve and support Irish agriculture, industry, science, and arts. From the introduction of its premium scheme to support agriculture, enterprise and small businesses in the 18th century, to the organisation of its agricultural shows in the 19th and 20th centuries, the RDS is proud of its rich history of helping Ireland to harness its natural resources. Today the RDS continues its mission to develop and nurture long-lasting positive impact in Irish society through its Foundation programme. This exhibition, drawn from material held in the RDS Library & Archives collections, explores the ways in which the RDS realised its foundation aims in the past and what we do today to find common ground with our partners to identify solutions for Ireland’s continued success into the future.
