Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Preston to George F. Fitzgerald, written on 2 September 1898, on paper, from his home in Bardowie, Orwell Park, Rathgar, County Dublin. Preston writes that he had “half-hoped” that Fitzpatrick had returned home and would persuade him to attend the meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. If Preston can begin work at the Royal University of Ireland next week, he will stay and work at home, but if not, he plans to go to the British Association’s meeting. He hopes to gain £100 to spend on his magnetic field as part of his studies of the Zeeman effect. He plans to write to Rücker [Sir Arthur William Rücker] to lay his application before the Council. He asks Fitzgerald for advice about requesting the money. He has already spent £150 on the experiment. He wishes the Fitzgerald family well. 4pp.
