The digital reproduction of scrapbook entitled Designs for Lace and Embroidery, RDS Art Industries Exhibition 1899. The book contains photographs of entries for the classes of Lace and Embroidery and Designs for Lace and Embroidery for the Arts-Industries Exhibition of August 1899.

The RDS began holding exhibitions of art and industries in the mid 1840s. Originally these exhibitions were held every three years to showcase Irish art and design. In 1890 the RDS held an “Exhibition of Irish Lace, Embroidery and Designs for Lace and Embroidery” during the annual Dublin Horse Show.

Over the next two years this exhibition expanded to include wood-carving and artistic metal and leather work. In 1893 the exhibition was renamed the Arts and Industries Exhibition
These exhibitions are the precursor to the RDS National Arts Competition, which is still held annually in conjunction with the Dublin Horse Show.
