Description
A letter from Charles Chree to John Edward Cullum.
Charles Chree apologizes for the delay in responding, explaining that he waited to consult a member of the Kew Committee before sending his data. Although the 1893 results have not yet been officially published, he is willing to share them on the condition that neither Mr. Cullum nor Prof. Fitzgerald publishes them before the committee’s report is released or permission is granted. pp. 3
Dear Mr Cullum,
I must apologies for the delay in answering your letter. This was due to me thinking it well to consult a member of the Kew Committee before yielding to my natural instincts to send you the data at once. The Kew results for 1889-1892 being already in the hands of the public I have no hesitation in sending you the data for these years in a [complete?] form.
The results for 1893 are in a somewhat different position as no publication for them will be made by the Kew Committee until their report for 1893 comes out, which wont be for a month or two yet. After what the member of the committee says, however I shall take it upon me to send you the results for 1893 on the presumption that you and Prof. Fitzgerald do not publish them until after our Report appears, or until I obtain the permission of the committee to your doing so.
If you want them to assist in working with your own results by throwing light on doubtful points, it would be a pity you should be delayed until after the next Committee meeting on March 30th.
I shall have the data put together at once and shall send you as soon as possible. I respect that a small fee will have to be charged in accordance with the wages of the observatory. I have little doubt that your paper will prove an interesting one for us, as it will help to bring out what is local and what general. I could send the results direct to Prof. Fitzgerald if time is a consideration.
Yours Faithfully,
Charles Chree
